How ERP Therapy Helps You Navigate OCD and Anxiety

What Is ERP Therapy?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and is also widely used for certain anxiety-related conditions. ERP helps clients gradually face feared thoughts, sensations, or situations without engaging in avoidance, compulsions, or safety behaviors.

How Does ERP Work?

In ERP, clients work with a therapist to identify triggers — such as intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or specific situations — and then intentionally and gradually face them in a structured, manageable way.

During exposures, clients practice refraining from compulsions or safety behaviors. Over time, anxiety naturally decreases through a process called habituation and inhibitory learning, and the brain learns that feared outcomes are unlikely, tolerable, or do not occur as predicted.

Who Is ERP For?

ERP is highly effective for:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), including checking, contamination fears, intrusive thoughts, and mental compulsions

  • Panic disorder and panic attacks

  • Social anxiety disorder

  • Health anxiety (illness anxiety disorder)

  • Specific phobias
